Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that are found in body fluids. We lose some of these, along with water, when we sweat.
Everyday hydration
For most people, regular drinks and a varied diet provide enough fluids and electrolytes. The NHS suggests around 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day as a general guide.
Longer or hotter sessions
During longer or more intense exercise, particularly in warm conditions, some people choose drinks that contain electrolytes alongside water.
A note of caution
Electrolyte products often contain salt. If you have been advised to limit salt or have a medical condition, check with a healthcare professional before use.
